Lana Del Rey - “Video Games”
Born To Die (2012) - Buy
My good friend Oana recommended a Lana Del Rey song to me. She let me hear it while we were at Jack Astors. I don’t remember if this was the exact track, regardless, it’s pretty darn good, so why not listen to it? Oana, if you’re reading this: Was “Video Games” the song you let me hear? Haha!

This sounds like everything Nikki Minaj should be. Too bad. I guess money is more important to her than a remarkable career of fantastic tunes.

Had to do a double-shot. This band just demands to’al respek! This is the second single off their new album, Not Your Kind of People, a title, that if you’re not familiar or don’t care for Garbage, is a testament to how much they give a fuck. Long live Garbage!

I saw Garbage a few days ago, and it was freakin’ awesome. Honestly, not trying to say my childhood was better than kids’ growing up today… wait a minute, that’s EXACTLY what I’m tryna say. Hey, the 90s were the 90s. There’s something intrinsically wonderful about them, something the 2000s only had a fraction of, and something the 2010s is almost foreign to. They just don’t make decades like they used to.

Still miss this band. One of the best modern punk albums. That’s all I got about the song. About me? Well, it’s that time of year again: It’s so hot my almost-naked body sticks to the faux-leather of my computer chair. TMI? Naah.

Funky Was The State of Affairs (2012) - Buy
I just love the album cover. Too bad there ain’t a video for it. The song’s got a great, young, refreshing grunge vibe to it. The kind that dirty make-outs are for, and subsequent (bad) sweaty one-night-stand sex.

Can’t. Can’t even put into words how it freaks me out how old this song is. One of the best songs of 1994. And it’s absolutely bat shit fucking crazy to think kids that are 18 right now were born then.

I’m only here to blog songs I really dig… I’m on the fence with this one; it’s so weird. Not the song; the emotional circumstance. Hear me out: The guitar riff, for some reason, takes me back to the early 90s. The sound, eerily I might add, taps that tiny nano-nerve inside my ear, and just shoots me back. The singing however, what 80s babies would call “chipmunk-y” (if you’ve ever dubbed a cassette tape, you’d know why. If not… you missed out on some funny ass times. 70s and 80s babies know what I’m talking about), is a bit strange. It doesn’t fit the rest of the song. On one hand, I’m moved terribly. On the other, I’m wincing. Decide for yourself.
PS: UGH—can’t find a buy link. Here’s the record label’s website. Annoys me when you can’t buy something that is on a Soundcloud.

Beat Culture - “You’re Hard To Resist”
Tokyo Dreamer (2012) - Buy
“Financial District” by Gold Panda, at least the intro, reminds me of this wonderful Beat Culture track from earlier this year. I miss this album. It’s quite fantastic, especially for being entirely produced by a teenager. Yup. You’ll want to keep an eye on BC. I’m sure he’s got much more up his sleeve.

One of my favorite hip-hop tracks of O’11, even if it is a remix. I only like remixes, unless it’s WAY doper than the original. And the Nick Catchdubs remix of “Die Like A Rockstar” is a track to do the dirty too.

If you’re familiar with James, the band that sings “Laid”—oh, not ringing any bells. Hmm—ya know the song that goes “This bed in on fire with passionate love/the neighbors complain about the noises above/but she only comes when she’s on tooop”. Still no? Here, I blogged it in September. But listen to “I Believe” first.
